Luzerne County Ribbon Cutting at Historic Train Station

WILKES-BARRE – Visit Luzerne County (the Luzerne County Convention & Visitors Bureau) will hold an official grand opening/ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, September 8, at 1 p.m. at its new home at the historic former train station in Wilkes-Barre. The former train station was built in 1868 and served as a passenger train station until 1963 and a freight train station until 1972. In the 1980s and 1990s, it was known as The Station and Market Street Square and served as a popular nightclub, restaurant and hotel. In 2021, the structure - which is on the National Register of Historic Places - was renovated to become the new home of Visit Luzerne County as well as private offices.  
 
“Though we moved into the train station earlier this year, we were waiting on a few things before holding an official ribbon-cutting event,’’ said Alan Stout, executive director of Visit Luzerne County. “All of the renovations to the inside of our offices had been completed in January, and we’ve been open to the public since February, but we were waiting for some of the exterior work to be completed, as well as some landscaping, and the installation of a new 14-ft, 3x7 “Visit Luzerne County” digital sign on Wilkes-Barre Boulevard. Now that all of that work has been completed, we are ready to officially unveil our new home.”
 
Invitees to the ribbon-cutting event include all of the members of the Pennsylvania General Assembly that serve Luzerne County, the mayors of all of the largest cities in Luzerne County, the Wyoming Valley Chamber, the Hazleton Chamber, the Back Mountain Chamber, the Pittston Chamber and the White Haven Chamber. Also invited are the Visit Luzerne County Advisory Board, members of Luzerne County Council, the Diamond City Partnership, two former Luzerne County managers, Luzerne County division heads and department heads, all past directors of the LCCVB, the Lackawanna County Visitors Bureau and the presidents/chancellors of our five area colleges and universities.
 
Speaking at the ceremony will be Alan Stout, executive director, Visit Luzerne County; Randy Robertson, Luzerne County Manager; Kendra Radle, Chairwoman, Luzerne County Council; George Albert, owner and developer of the Train Station property; State Senator John Yudichak.
 
Ribbon-cutting remarks should conclude by 1:30 p.m. All will then be invited inside the Train Station to visit the new offices of Visit Luzerne County. Refreshments will be served.
